Civic Engagement

We believe a civic society that everyone feels empowered to participate in is at the core of a thriving democracy. We’ve helped local communities with redistricting efforts, civic engagement initiatives, and voter education programs that help ensure everyone has a voice in their community.

What We’ve Done

In 2020, we ran a nonpartisan voter education campaign that reached over a million Alabama voters via text with information about how to vote safely in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We’ve also worked with rural communities to create representative, collaborative redistricting processes that ensure all members of the community are fairly represented.

Hometown worked hard to make sure these efforts continue statewide as organizational founders of multiple statewide networks that are coordinating nonpartisan civic engagement work among dozens of organizations.

Meanwhile, we continue to focus where we always have: on rural communities.

We think democracy works when people are working in deep relationship with elected officials, whether that’s on redistricting or solving the problems facing rural communities, but many local governments don’t have the resources to do this kind of work effectively.

By working collaboratively with both local leaders and community members, we believe we can develop solutions—inside and outside of government—that truly address the problems impacting local communities every day.
